Don’t be Hen-Pecked by Negativity!July 27, 2026by Anne Schlafly, Chairman, Eagle ForumThe Naysayers have come out in force to stop Missouri from prospering. Can you believe that some people are actually saying that they want income taxes? The road to prosperity is paved with low taxes and we in Missouri have an incredible opportunity to make income tax constitutionally illegal.Regardless of those Henny Penny hand-wringing types, the sky will not fall if we scrap the tax. Amendment 5, on the ballot on Tuesday, August 4, will be phased in with revenue triggers, meaning the current tax system will be eliminated when revenue is sufficient to cover budget needs. Just as families across our state are budgeting to afford back-to-school shoes and maybe a new backpack, so, too, will the phase-out of the Missouri State income tax only occur when the revenue is in the bank. Make no mistake: the people opposed to Amendment 5 want to grow a bigger government at the expense of economic growth and prosperity. Having Missourians dependent on handouts from the State means lower-income people receive less. Keeping people trapped in a cycle of welfare means they never get ahead. Back to the story of Henny Penny. After the acorn fell on her head, Henny Penny convinced Hen-Pen, Rooster Booster, and Ducky-Chucky that it was the sky falling, so they met up with Foxy-Loxy, who lured them to his lair, where they came to a bad end. Believing that something terrible is happening can cause anyone to misunderstand reality. An acorn falling grows into an oak tree. We must look beyond the scare tactics to envision the possibilities for all Missourians. Nine other states have eliminated their income tax and they are prospering. Missouri should not sit this one out; let’s get ahead. We can look deeper at the scare tactics regarding the Hancock amendment and realize that the modification to the Hancock amendment is only in the context of reforming the tax code and only if there is a corresponding reduction of government to any new revenue. The principles are in place and will remain in place. How many times have you looked at the directions for baking a casserole and thought, “That’s too much salt and it needs a little oregano?” Or looked at furniture assembly directions and thought, “That’s overly complex; I can just put this together myself?” In Missouri, we like to chart our own course and if the Hancock Amendment is good in principle in that it keeps lawmakers honest, then so is preserving the Hancock Amendment and allowing a new system of taxation to be mapped. We all thrive when government is smaller. Americans cheer for reducing and eliminating taxes. Eliminating Missouri’s income tax will allow for economic growth and a competitive state. This will lead to more jobs and prosperity for all Missourians. On August 4, vote “Yes” on Amendment 5 to give all Missourians the chance at voting for a Missouri that embraces innovation, competition, economic growth and jobs. Let’s go Missouri.
